Partner Organisation
The South African Institute for Entrepreneurship

Towards the end of 1996, TTO's board of directors took a decision to establish the Institute for Development Services (IDS). This decision was taken to capitalise on TTO's expertise in an effort to generate income and to become more independent of donor funding.

This Section 21 Company emerged out of a number of converging forces, namely:
  • the pull of the market desiring TTO's expertise
  • the range of expertise and experience within TTO which proved marketable
  • the need for TTO to create self-sustaining activities

The organisation changed it's name to South African Institute for Entrpreneurship (SAIE) in 2003 to better describe its work. SAIE is a Proudly South African company.

SAIE offers business and entrepreneurial skills development products to institutions operating in the education and development sectors.

Since its inception SAIE has grown from a two-person organisation to one with a staff of 9 people. Over the years since its inception SAIE has covered its own costs and it is envisaged that it will grow over the next few years to the extent that it will be able to make a meaningful financial contribution to TTO.

SAIE's entrepreneurship products (the BEST Game and the youth entrepreneurship programme, Business VENTURES) are now being used in over 2000 educational institutions and development agencies in South Africa and in more than 75 countries. This has created international exposure of the work that TTO is doing in South Africa, and has positioned TTO as the organisation that has created products which are desired by development agencies around the world. It is refereshing for the 'South' to be assisting the 'North' rather than it so often being the other way around.

SAIE's vision is to create an entrepreneurial mindset in South African youth and to be a world player in the development of small businesses through the provision of innovative and high quality materials.
